Volleyball picks up two wins at Monticello Classic

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Harding Volleyball team picked up two non-conference wins against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, 3-2 and Belhaven College, 3-0 Friday in the Monticello Classic. The two victories move the Lady Bisons to a 10-4 record.

Harding captured the first set from Puerto Rico-Mayaguez but Harding let the second set get away from them on a close 26-24 set score. Harding broke the tie in the third set dominating 25-13 but Puerto Rico-Mayaguez wouldn't go down without a fight, taking a 25-23 fourth set. Harding had Puerto Rico-Mayaguez up 14-10 in the final set but Puerto Rico climbed back to make it 14-12, a kill by senior middle blocker Shellie Rummer sealed the win for the Lady Bisons.

Rummer and junior outside hitter Manuela Nesheva each had 19 kills in the match. Nesheva picked up a double-double adding 16 digs for the Lady Bisons. Sophomore defensive specialist Emily Tate had four service aces for Harding and also added 17 digs.

In the second match against Belhaven College, Harding was led by freshman outside hitter Savannah Smith who had 12 kills and eight digs for Harding. Harding won each set handily, 25-16, 25-13, 25-7.

Harding will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to play the University of Alabama-Huntsville at 12:30 p.m. on the Henderson State University campus.
